Sign Installation and Zoning

Following are the basic steps to install a Cradle Mount, Pedestal Mount or Monument Mount sign.

Step 1: Call your local building and inspection department and find out the following: Do you need a building permit to put up a sign and what inspections are required? Does the building department need to approve the engineering drawing before you put up the sign? Are there local code restrictions on the size or height of the sign.

Step 2: Order your sign based on 1 above. It will be delivered in about 4 weeks, which will give you time for step 3 and 4

Step 3: Put in the foundation – Remember to call before you dig. Depending on your energy level you can do this your self or you can get a foundation contractor to do it for you. The anchor bolt template must be used to insure that the sign will fit properly on arrival.

Step 4: If it is a lighted sign, hire a licensed electrician to install and run your electrical connection to building code requirements. This should result in using the proper size wire (do not use #14 wire – wire size should be either #12 or #10 depending on the distance form the power source to the sign) and proper breaker for your sign. The sign must be on a GFCI protected circuit.

Step 5: Take delivery of your sign. Make sure you have enough manpower or equipment to properly handle the sign and prevent injury to anyone. Follow instructions to attach and level the sign to the anchor bolts.
